The insanity defense

In some cases there are indications that the defendant may not be fully responsible for his or her actions due to a psychiatric disease or due to intoxication at the time of the criminal act.

 It‘s actually possible to be aquitted because of this even if you have committed a serious crime.

But while this means that you won‘t have to go to prison, a lot of times it will mean that you are compulsorily placed in a psychiatric hospital or a detoxification clinic. Often you will be held there for a lot longer than your prison sentence would have been if you were found responsible for the crime you have committed.

 So you should carefully deliberate if you really want to use the „insanity defence“ in court and hire a lawyer that is very well informed about this problem
